Hello, my name is Kyle Matthew Moore and I would like to say how thankful I am to call the Alleghany Highlands home. I have lived here for 26 years with my family and we love this community. I have been a member of the Virginia State Police as a Trooper and a Sergeant during that time. I also served in the U.S. Army and retired in 2017 as a Master Sergeant.

The Alleghany County Sheriff's Office and Regional Jail is saddened by the loss of retired Captain Michael L. Craghead (Mickey). Mickey left this world a better place than he found it by displaying his kind attitude and very affectionate smile to all of those that he met. We cannot say that for all of us who worked with him though. If we needed to be corrected, Captain Craghead would immediately go into supervisor mode, but after it was all over, he would make sure that you were ok.
Captain Craghead was a force in the current design of the Regional Jail, he worked many years in the old jail and ran it just as if it were the most up to date jail in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Captain Craghead was a professional and he demanded that from his staff.
Mickey was also a very devout Christian, attending Grace Brethren Church in Covington.
We still enjoyed having Mickey stop by the office and share some words.

Burglary Investigation Underway in Clifton Forge
ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA. (August 13, 2026) – On August 12, 2026, deputies with the Alleghany County Sheriff's Office responded to Stacks Lane in Clifton Forge, Virginia, regarding a reported burglary.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered that an unknown individual had unlawfully entered the residence and stolen a locked safe containing several firearms. Preliminary investigation indicates that a vehicle was used to forcibly remove the safe by pulling it through the exterior wall of the residence, causing significant damage to the home.
The scene was processed by deputies and investigators, and evidence was collected. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Alleghany County Sheriff's Office at (540) 965-1770 and request to speak with Investigator Morris. Individuals wishing to remain anonymous may call (540) 965-1776 and select Option 8 to leave information.
