Today is a special day for the Alleghany County Sheriffs Office. One of our own will graduate patrol school. Deputy Scotti Browning who has worked in the jail for several years has transferred into the patrol division. He will assume the additional grant funded School Resource Officer position.
One reason Sheriff Moore is so proud of him is that his father and I worked alongside each other for many years and I watched Scotti grow up into the man he is now. Mike I know you are proud of him also.
Congratulations Scotti Browning.

On the night of May 28, 2026, deputies with the Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported laser strike incident involving a medical helicopter operating within Alleghany County.
During the incident, an individual intentionally directed a laser at the aircraft while it was in flight and attempting to land at LewisGale Alleghany Hospital. The flight crew advised that the laser interference created a significant hazard and nearly forced the crew to abort the mission.
Deputies immediately responded to the area and initiated an investigation. Through information provided by the flight crew, deputies were able to identify the residence from which the laser originated. The suspect was subsequently identified as James Eric Caldwell.
Caldwell was taken into custody and charged with a felony violation of Virginia Code § 5.1-22, Interference with Operation of Aircraft.
The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that directing lasers at aircraft is extremely dangerous and poses a serious threat to pilots, medical personnel, passengers, and the public. Such actions are reckless and can temporarily impair a pilot’s vision and jeopardize critical emergency operations.
